They’re there for us in the heat and the cold, in the rain and the snow. There’s even a National Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. The presence of a crossing guard can be the key deciding factor for a parent to allow their child to walk or bike to school. But as budgets get tight, school crossing guard programs can feel the strain. Learn from programs in two states that are tackling these challenges.
Regardless of whether crossing guards are police or school district employees, this webinar will present examples of city and school district collaboration, and provide ideas for how to address common challenges such as training, staffing shortages and selection of crossing guard locations. Phoenix, Arizona will highlight strategies and lessons learned from operating a crossing guard training program for 50 years and providing ongoing support to the school districts that employ the guards. The New Jersey Safe Routes to School Resource Center will describe findings from an evaluation of existing crossing guard practices in New Jersey, the roll out of a statewide training program, and will review resources developed to help municipalities operate effective and efficient programs.
