Merriam Avenue School in Newton, a town in Sussex County, holds several walk to school parades each year. The school works with the police department, parents, and the Safe Routes to School Coordinator from TransOptions, the area’s transportation management association, to plan and host the parades. Newton is a small and walkable town, so it is important that kids learn about pedestrian safety early. Walking to school in Newton is truly a community experience!
During the walk to school parade, students are escorted by parents, police officers, crossing guards, and school staff as they walk and bike to school along a set route, with students joining the group along the way. By holding these events regularly, the hope is to create a cultural shift in the community so that walking to school is the norm.
