Traditionally, Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs have focused on students in grades K–8. Recent legislation extended eligibility through grade 12, creating new opportunities to support high school students in safely walking and bicycling to school. To prepare for this expansion, this study interviewed 18 SRTS coordinators and partner organizations to inform the development of tailored program recommendations. Participants offered valuable insights into their high school initiatives, including funding sources, engagement approaches, educational activities, and the challenges encountered when adapting SRTS to older youth. The resulting recommendations acknowledge the greater independence and leadership potential of high school–aged students and incorporate strategies and considerations successfully used by the programs represented in the study.
