As of January 2018, eight counties and over 140 municipalities within New Jersey have adopted Complete Street policies. The State has been especially receptive to the efforts of improving safety on streets for all users. However, as more municipalities adopt these policies, many questions surface regarding how to implement Complete Street projects and strategies.

To better prepare local officials, staff and the public on implementing Complete Streets, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) is offering free training and technical assistance, collaborating with Sustainable Jersey, the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, and Together North Jersey. Workshops on June 26th at NJTPA and June 27th at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers in New Brunswick were held to cover crafting a Complete Streets policy, integrating into the local planning process and best practices.

In addition to these workshops, communities can apply for the Complete Streets Technical Assistance Program, and the deadline to apply is on July 27, 2018. This program is open to municipalities in the NJTPA’s 13-county region that are looking to complete specific tasks toward advancing complete streets initiatives in their communities.  No direct funding to municipalities will be provided. After applications are received, nine municipalities will be selected to receive close to $10,000 in technical assistance toward completing their projects. Projects can include walkability workshops; bicycle audits and network plans; complete streets marketing; or guidance on integrating trucks into existing complete street plans.
