October 7th is International Walk and Bike to School Day! Students from throughout New Jersey will be participating in this global event, joining communities throughout the world in walking and bicycling to school on the same day. But why stop at one day? In New Jersey October is “Walk-tober”, an entire month of fun, educational, and healthy walk and bike to school activities and events that focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety, improving our environment, and living a healthy and active lifestyle. October is a great time to get outside, leave the car at home, and enjoy the beautiful fall weather while building connections between your families, schools, and the community by walking and biking to school. The benefits of walking and bicycling to school are contagious, so spread the word!

To see which communities are walking and biking to school in New Jersey this October, be sure to visit the National Center for Safe Routes to School’s Walk and Bike to School webpage. Is your school or community on the list? If you don’t have an event scheduled, don’t worry – there is still time to contact your local TMA Safe Routes to School Regional Coordinator and work with them to schedule an event during October. For more information about October Walk and Bike to School Month, be sure to visit the New Jersey Safe Routes to School Resource Center website.
