Until the passing of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), in late 2021, national guidance focused on implementing projects and programs to benefit children in grades K-8. No, for the first time, the needs of high schools and high school students are being explicitly considered in SRTS projects, programs, and infrastructure funding. With this broadened mission, this paper explores which aspects of the New Jersey Safe Routes to School Program should be modified, what opportunities exist for expanding programming to high schools, and which new avenues and partnerships should be explored to ensure continued program excellence.
