Crossing guards are essential to ensuring children can travel to and from school safely, yet many communities across New Jersey continue to struggle with recruiting and retaining them. This report presents a range of actionable strategies to strengthen crossing guard programs, including offering competitive wages and benefits, enhancing training, establishing mentorship opportunities, and fostering a more supportive and responsive work environment. 

The report also emphasizes the importance of community recognition, multilingual outreach, and targeted infrastructure improvements to support crossing guards in their roles. Developed by the New Jersey Safe Routes Resource Center with support from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), this resource is designed to help municipalities build and maintain a reliable, well-supported crossing guard workforce.
