Governor Mikie Sherrill has officially proclaimed May as Bike Month, as well as New Jersey Walk and Bike to School Month. During this time, schools, municipalities, and community organizations statewide will organize activities that encourage walking and biking. Bike to Work Week in 2026 is scheduled for May 11–17, with Bike to Work Day taking place on Friday, May 15. Although National Bike & Roll to School Day falls on May 6, many New Jersey communities will hold their celebrations on various days throughout the month to best fit local schedules.

Events that promote walking and biking to school highlight the importance of physical activity and healthy habits for students, while also bringing attention to pedestrian and cyclist safety, reducing traffic congestion, and supporting environmental sustainability. Students who engage in physical activity before school are often more focused and better prepared to learn throughout the day. These initiatives reflect New Jersey’s ongoing efforts to make streets safer and more accessible for everyone, particularly children.

Communities interested in participating in Bike Month or Walk and Bike to School Month are encouraged to connect with their local Transportation Management Association (TMA) to plan events or learn about existing activities nearby. Through funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, each of the state’s eight TMAs has designated regional coordinators who help schools and communities launch or grow SRTS programs. TMAs can assist in organizing engaging and educational events such as Walk & Bike to School days, bike safety rodeos, community rides, and traffic safety education programs that promote walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation.

If you haven’t already worked with your TMA, find your local SRTS Regional Coordinator today and see how they can help you to celebrate this May!
