“Stop idling for earth.” This simple message took the top spot in KMM’s first anti-idling bookmark contest. KMM invited Middlesex County fifth graders to submit designs for a bookmark containing an anti-idling message.
Jessica Vasquez of South Plainfield was selected as the winner after judges reviewed 369 submissions from schools across Middlesex County. She received a $100 gift card from Magyar Bank at KMM’s Annual Breakfast on May 22.
The winning bookmark will be printed and 1000 copies will be distributed through the bank and schools in Middlesex County. The reverse side of the bookmark will show the designs of runners-up Sharanjit K. of Woodbridge, Jazlyn R. of Perth Amboy, Mikaya U. of Milltown, and Haemah A. of Carteret.
KMM provided the children with information about the dangers of automobile emissions from idling vehicles, exercises they could do to calculate the pounds of pollution emitted by idling cars at their schools, and tips to educate others about idling.
KMM’s Executive Director Bill Neary said, “The entries showed that the children really thought about the dangers of auto idling. I’m amazed at their creativity.”
