Join us for an update on the New Jersey 2020 Strategic Highway Safety Plan which includes goals, objectives, performance measures, and a specific bicycle and pedestrian emphasis area to guide safety programs and investments and help reduce highway fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads. This wide-ranging plan focuses not only on physical improvements to the roadway system in order to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes, but also includes education and outreach efforts aimed at changing road user behavior to promote a culture of safety.

Safe Routes Academy: No Money No Problem. Meet Your NJ Safe Routes Coordinator
More children and youth are walking and bicycling in and around their neighborhoods, increasing the need for safety education, programs, and resources. Safe Routes Regional Coordinators from New Jersey's eight Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) are funded through a partnership with the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to provide free technical assistance to help your school or community address safer conditions for walking and bicycling. In this session, we will discuss some of the resources and programs available through Safe Routes Regional Coordinators who can help to provide the inspiration and education needed to keep families walking and bicycling. Participants will meet the TMA staff who serve their municipality and learn more about how they can support your community.

Safe Routes Academy: Building Municipal Support for Better Streets
How do you get started identifying and addressing pedestrian and bicycle opportunities and concerns in your community? How do you adopt Complete and Green Streets in your municipality? How do you formalize a local committee? Local advocates from several New Jersey communities will share lessons learned and methods and tactics that have worked for them to build local support and adopt and implement Complete and Green Streets policies. This session will help you identify potential partners within your community, create important partnerships among other stakeholders, and generate ideas and actions to make walking and bicycling safer and more desirable modes of transportation.

Bound Brook Youth Engagement
Inspired by the youth in Bound Brook, the high school students worked collaboratively with their town, Rutgers Bloustein graduate students, RideWise, Somerset County planning and other organization to improve their downtown and make it safer for them to walk and bike in Bound Brook by creating beautiful, colorful and artistic crosswalks and street murals and a parklet. So cool! -
Fair Haven, NJ - Third Street Community Connection
Fair Haven, NJ works with the schools to close down Third Street which is a local connector road between the Elementary School and Middle School during arrival and dismissal so that students and parents can walk and bike safely to school.

Improving School Crossings
Traffic safety officers in New Brunswick, NJ have taken several steps to improve the safety of their crossing guards and the children they help on their way to and from school. The Improving School Crossings video demonstrates relatively inexpensive strategies that police departments can adopt to improve the safety of their school crossings.
