Spring is here, but there’s no need to wait for warmer weather to keep walking and biking! Here are some tips for staying comfortable, warm, and safe in the unpredictable weather.
Dress in layers: Having many thinner layers allows you to adapt to rapidly changing weather conditions better than one heavy coat. A base layer of moisture-wicking fabric will help keep you comfortable, and a windproof outer layer will ensure you stay warm.
Protect your extremities: You lose a lot of heat through your head, hands, and feet, so a quality hat, and warm gloves and socks are essential. When biking, make sure your hat is thin to allow your helmet to still fit properly. Hats and gloves made for running are often cheaper than their cycling specific counterparts and perform just as well.
Wear good footwear: Shoes with a thick tread (such as hiking boots) will keep your feet warm and give traction in all weather, both on the ground and on bike pedals. Waterproof shoes and/or wool socks are great for wet weather. If possible, leaving an extra pair of shoes at your school or workplace can save you from wet feet all day if you get caught out in the rain, just remember to put your wet shoes somewhere warm to dry!
Don’t overdress: Overheating can be just as uncomfortable as being cold, make a habit of checking the weather before going out and in no time, you’ll know what to wear based on the temperature. It is ideal to have different gloves, hats, and jackets for different temperatures. If you find yourself overheating, you can partially unzip layers (or open vents if your jacket has them) to cool off. A waterproof jacket can help to keep you dry and comfortable on a rainy day.
Be cautious of wet weather braking: Both bikes and cars will take longer to stop when the ground is wet, especially just after it starts raining. Be sure that cars are fully stopped before crossing the street and when biking go slower, especially around turns, to maintain control.
Stay visible: Inclement weather can make it harder to see, so stay safe by wearing bright colors or reflective gear whenever possible. When biking, daytime running lights can help you be seen.
Walking and biking is a fun and healthy way to get around, and you shouldn’t let the weather stop you from enjoying your commute! With a positive attitude you can brave any weather and enjoy fresh air and all the other benefits of active transportation
